Delivery North: Fort Lauderdale to the Chesapeake Bay aboard the Omikron OT-60

Follow the Omikron OT-60 on its delivery north from Fort Lauderdale to the Chesapeake Bay, with highlights from the voyage.

There is something special about pointing the bow north and knowing the next four days will be dictated by weather, sea state, good seamanship, and great camaraderie. It had been a while since I had completed a multi-day offshore delivery, so leaving Fort Lauderdale aboard the Omikron OT-60 was something I had genuinely been looking forward to. More than anything, I wanted to see how this unique yacht would perform when it stopped being a showpiece and became a serious passagemaker.

The mid-Atlantic coast is rarely predictable at this time of year. Low-pressure systems seem to roll through one after another, making weather windows both precious and short-lived. As we ventured north, we spotted an opportunity to round Cape Hatteras in three days time and didn’t hesitate. Riding the Gulf Stream north, we settled into a comfortable rhythm as the miles quietly disappeared beneath the hull.

What impressed me most wasn’t just the ride, it was how little effort the boat seemed to require. The OT-60 remained remarkably stable and composed, even when conditions became less than perfect. Conversation at the helm never required raised voices, and after hours underway, fatigue simply wasn’t a factor. The combination of low noise levels, excellent visibility, and an uncluttered helm made long watches genuinely enjoyable.

The layout also came into its own offshore. The spacious interior gave everyone room to relax between watches without ever feeling confined, while the connection between the helm and living spaces meant nobody ever felt isolated from the rest of the crew. It is a boat designed for spending time together.

Of course, every delivery has its memorable moments. A refreshing swim in the middle of the Atlantic on a calm afternoon is something few people ever experience. Each evening, a pod of dolphins would appear to escort us into sunset, turning the end of each day into something we looked forward to. Then it was a few hours of sleep before climbing back into the helm seat for the midnight watch.

From a captain’s perspective, thoughtful details stand out. The exceptional visibility from the helm inspires confidence in all conditions, while the OT-60’s efficient hull quietly proves its worth offshore. Covering long distances while sipping fuel doesn’t just reduce running costs, it extends your cruising options and makes ambitious passages feel comfortably within reach.

After 900 offshore miles, one thing became abundantly clear. The Omikron OT-60 is quiet, composed, and effortlessly capable. Not only is it comfortable enough for long-distance cruising, it actively encourages you to keep going.
